Technical matters before installing a self-priming pump

Self-priming pumps create a low-pressure area inside the pump through the high-speed rotation of the centrifugal impeller, thus achieving self-priming. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that the pump's inlet does not leak, preventing external air from entering. Otherwise, not only will pump efficiency be compromised, but also severe vibration and noise will occur during operation.

Technical standards before installing a self-priming pump are critical:

  1. Before installation, ensure the inlet pipe's dimensions and relative height do not exceed the self-priming pump's allowable suction head range.

  2. The inlet pipe must be airtight. It should be a sealed pipe; even a small pinhole will affect the self-priming pump's self-priming ability.

  3. During installation, do not cut corners. Some customers directly place the self-priming pump with its factory-fixed wooden base on the ground, which is incorrect and can easily cause vibration, noise, and equipment failure. The correct method is to fix the pump base to a solid, flat platform or sturdy ground.

  4. Do not mount the self-priming pump on a supporting frame welded from scrap steel. This is because the contact area between the scrap steel and the pump is too small. With the base bolts fixed, a large part of the pump base is suspended in the air, easily damaging the coaxiality of the base and coupling, leading to excessive vibration and easy coupling damage.

If the centrifugal pump's output is insufficient or no water is discharged, check if air is entering through pinholes, gaps, or loose connections at the inlet. Some defects are very small and difficult to detect immediately, often leading to time-consuming and fruitless searches.

Operation and maintenance guide for medium and large self-priming pumps

  1. When starting the self-priming pump, pay attention to the correctness of the pump shaft rotation.

  2. Pay attention to any abnormal sounds and vibrations during rotation.

  3. Observe the pressure gauge and vacuum gauge readings. After starting, when the readings stabilize after a period of fluctuation, it indicates that the pump is filled with liquid and has entered normal operation.

  4. During the self-priming stage, before the pump enters normal operation, pay attention to the temperature rise of the water in the pump. If this process is too long and the water temperature is high, stop the pump and check the cause.

  5. If the liquid temperature in the pump is too high, making self-priming difficult, you can briefly shut down the pump, allow the liquid in the discharge pipe to flow back into the pump, or add liquid to the pump casing to lower the liquid temperature before restarting.

  6. If the pump experiences strong vibration and noise during operation, it may be due to cavitation. Cavitation is mainly caused by two reasons: excessive flow velocity in the inlet pipe or excessive suction head. If the flow velocity is too high, adjust the inlet and outlet pressure regulating valves and check the pressure gauge reading. If there is a blockage in the inlet pipe, clear it immediately. If the suction head is too high, adjust the relative height of the centrifugal pump installation.
