Maintenance and upkeep of axial flow pumps

Maintenance and upkeep of axial flow pumps:

Axial flow pumps require enhanced monitoring and maintenance to ensure long-term safe operation. This also allows for timely fault elimination to minimize or prevent failures.

(1) Check the pump shaft and drive shaft for bending due to transportation; if any, straighten them.

(2) The pump installation elevation must comply with the product specifications to meet NPSH and startup requirements.

(3) A screen should be installed before the water enters the pool to prevent debris from entering the pump. The water flow rate through the screen should not exceed 0.3 m/s.

(4) Before installing the pump, check if the blade installation angle meets the requirements and if the blades are loose.

(5) After installation, check if the nuts of each coupling and the foundation bolts are tightened. When tightening the nuts on the drive shaft and pump shaft, pay attention to the thread direction.

(6) The drive shaft and pump shaft must be installed on the same vertical line, with an allowable error of less than 0.03 mm/m.

(7) The pump's discharge pipe should be supported by another bracket and not by the pump body.

(8) Gate valves should not be installed on the pump outlet pipe; if present, they must be fully opened before starting.

(9) When using a check valve, it is best to add a counterweight to balance the weight of the gate, making the pump operation more economical.

(10) For grease-lubricated transmission devices, during inspection, the bearing oil chamber should be disassembled and cleaned, and lubricating oil should be refilled. Pay special attention to ensure that rubber bearings do not come into contact with oil.

(11) Before starting the pump, pour water or soapy water into the short pipe of the upper packing gland to lubricate the rubber or plastic bearings. Stop the pump after it runs normally.

(12) Before each pump start-up, rotate the coupling three to four times and check for any imbalance. If such a phenomenon occurs, the cause must be determined and eliminated before operation.

(13) When the axial flow pump is running, pay attention to the following points:

① Is the impeller immersion depth sufficient, i.e., is the inlet water level too low, to avoid affecting the flow rate or generating noise.

② Is the outer edge of the impeller and the impeller casing worn, is there any debris around the blades, and are the rubber or plastic bearings too tight or burned out.

③ Are the fastening bolts loose, and is the center of the pump shaft and drive shaft aligned.

(14) Since gate valves are generally not installed on the axial flow pump discharge pipe, the pump can be stopped directly. After stopping the pump, wipe off the water and oil stains on the surface of the pump and motor. After long-term disuse or shutdown in winter, the water in the pump casing should be immediately drained for axial flow pumps and mixed flow pumps. Issues that cannot be addressed during operation should be handled promptly after shutdown.

(15) After the irrigation and drainage season, the axial flow pump should be overhauled after running for about 1000 hours; a major overhaul should be conducted after about 2000 hours of operation.
